Ruffled Crochet Cup Coaster
Materials:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (approx. 100 grams in pale pink)
- Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Using the Size H hook, ensure your gauge is: 4 inches = 14 double crochets (dc) and 8 rows. To measure, create a 4" x 4" square swatch in double crochet, then count the stitches and rows.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
Instructions:
1. Start with a foundation chain: Make a slip knot and chain 5. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
2. Round 1: Inside the ring, chain 3 (counts as your first dc), then make 11 more dc into the ring for a total of 12 dc. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (12 dc)
3. Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the same st. *2 dc in the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (24 dc)
4. Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the same st. *1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (36 dc)
5. Round 4: Ch 3, dc in the same st. *1 dc in the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (48 dc)
6. Ruffled Edging: Ch 1, *5 dc in the next st (this creates the ruffle); skip the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first ch-1. This creates the lovely ruffle around the edges.
7. Finishing: Cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Finish off by pulling the yarn through the last loop. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Make sure to secure any loose ends well, so your coaster maintains its shape.
Optional Variation: You can change the color of the yarn for seasonal themes or use multiple colors to create a striped effect! Just remember to change your yarn at the end of any round.
Blocking: Lightly steam block your coaster by placing a damp cloth over it and gently pressing with a warm iron. This helps to flatten any uneven edges and enhances the ruffle’s shape.
