Simple Crochet Circle
Materials:
- DK Weight Cotton Yarn (about 50g)
- Size G (4.0 mm) Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
To measure gauge, crochet a 4" x 4" square in your working stitch. For this project, gauge is not crucial, but approximately 5 stitches and 5 rows equals 1 inch in double crochet.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Instructions:
Round 1: Start with a magic ring. If you're unsure how to do this, simply ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring. Inside this ring, ch 3 (counts as your first dc), then work 11 more dc into the ring. (Total: 12 dc) Tighten the magic ring to close. Join with a sl st in the top of the ch-3. (12 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). In the same st, work 2 dc. Continue around, increasing in each stitch (2 dc in each stitch). Join with sl st at top of ch-3. (24 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 3. Work 1 dc in the first stitch, in the next stitch work 2 dc. Repeat this pattern around (1 dc and then 2 dc). Join with sl st at top of ch-3. (36 stitches)
Round 4: Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the next st, then 1 dc in the following 2 stitches. Repeat this pattern (1 dc in 2 stitches and 2 dc in 1 stitch) until the end of the round. Join with sl st. (48 stitches)
Finishing: To finish, cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Pull the tail through the last stitch to secure it. Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends. You can block your circle if desired, which will help flatten it out and give it a nicer shape.
Optional Variations:
- Use a different colored yarn to create a striped effect by changing colors every round.
- Make it larger by continuing to add rounds with graduated increases (1 dc in next 3, then 2 dc, etc.).
This simple pattern will help you create a versatile crochet circle that can serve many purposes. Happy crocheting!
