Simple Crochet Coaster
Materials:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (white, approximately 50 yards)
- 5.0 mm (H) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Your gauge is not crucial for this project, but if you want to check, you can crochet a 4" square and count the stitches. Aim for about 4 stitches per inch for a sturdy coaster.
Abbreviations:
- CH = chain
- SC = single crochet
- SL ST = slip stitch
- DC = double crochet
Instructions:
Round 1: Start with a magic ring or chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a loop. Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet) and make 11 double crochets into the magic ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain (total 12 stitches).
Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first DC), and in the same stitch, make 1 DC. 2 DC in each DC around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain (total 24 stitches).
Round 3: Chain 3 (counts as first DC), and in the same stitch, make 1 DC. In the next stitch, make 1 DC. Repeat (2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in next stitch) around. Join with a slip stitch (total 36 stitches).
Round 4: Chain 1, SC in the same stitch. SC in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch (total 36 stitches).
Finishing:
Cut the yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Pull the tail through the last loop and tighten. Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle. To reshape and flatten your coaster, you can lightly steam block it by placing a damp cloth over it and carefully applying heat with an iron.
Optional Variations:
- Add a second color for a contrasting edge by changing yarn in Round 4.
- Make larger coasters by adding more rounds of double crochet following the same pattern of increases.
