Simple Crochet Dishcloth
Materials:
- Yarn: 100% Cotton Yarn, Worsted Weight (4) - Approximately 50g (1.75 oz)
- Hook: Size H-8 (5.0 mm)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)
Gauge:
Check your gauge by making a small swatch. You should get about 14 stitches and 14 rows per 4 inches in single crochet. If your swatch is too small, try a larger hook; if too big, try a smaller hook.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Instructions:
- Foundation Chain: Start by making a slip knot and then chain 30. This will set you up for a square dishcloth.
- Row 1: In the second chain from your hook, make 1 single crochet (sc). Continue to make 1 sc in each chain across. You should end up with 29 stitches. Turn your work.
- Row 2: Chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch), then make 1 sc in each stitch across the row. You should still have 29 stitches (your rows will now start to form a square). Turn your work.
- Repeat Row 2: Continue repeating Row 2 until your dishcloth measures about 10 inches from the starting chain. This should take about 30 rows.
- Finish: After completing your last row, turn your work and make 1 slip stitch in each stitch to create a neat edge. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail for weaving in ends.
- Weave in Ends: Use your tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends on the back of the dishcloth. This ensures your work stays tidy and secure.
Finishing Tips:
To give your dishcloth a fresh look, consider blocking it by lightly steaming and shaping it to ensure it lays flat. This is especially helpful if you notice any curling.
Optional Variations:
Feel free to use different colors or even create a striped pattern by changing yarn colors every few rows for a fun, colorful design!
