Smiley Face Cardholder

Materials:

Worsted weight cotton yarn in blue (approx. 50 yards)
Worsted weight cotton yarn in white (approx. 20 yards)
5 mm (H) crochet hook
1 yellow smiley button (optional)

Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Gauge:

To ensure a proper fit, measure your gauge by making a small square of double crochet stitches, approximately 4 inches x 4 inches. If your square does not match this size, adjust your hook size accordingly. Using the 5 mm hook, aim for about 4 rows and 10 stitches in 4 inches.

CH = Chain
DC = Double Crochet
SL ST = Slip Stitch

Instructions:

Base:

Using blue yarn, make a slipknot and CH 25.
In the 4th CH from the hook, make 1 DC. This will form the first row. (You should have 22 DC total.)
Turn your work and CH 3 (this counts as your first DC). DC in each of the next 21 stitches. (22 DC).
Repeat step 3 for a total of 7 rows, or until your piece measures about 4 inches in height.

Striping:

Switch to white yarn. CH 3 and DC in each of the next 22 stitches for the next row.
Turn your work. Switch back to blue yarn. Next row will also be made in blue.
Continue alternating between white and blue every other row for a total of 4 stripes (2 blue and 2 white).

Final Assembly:

Fold your piece in half, making sure the last row of blue aligns with the first row of blue.
Using slip stitches, seam the sides together to create a pocket. Ensure that your stitches are even and secure.
Turn your cardholder inside out so the seam is on the inside.

Optional Smiley Face Button:

Using your tapestry needle, stitch the yellow smiley button onto the front center of your cardholder, making sure it's secure.

Finishing:
