Textured Crocheted Pillow Cover
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (Medium, Category 4): 1 skein each of burgundy, mustard yellow, light brown, and dark brown.
- Crochet hook: 5 mm (H/8)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
Gauge:
10 double crochet (dc) stitches x 6 rows = 4 inches square. To check your gauge, work a small swatch (about 4x4 inches) in double crochet and measure. Adjust hook size if necessary to meet gauge.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
Instructions:
Body of Pillow:
- Begin by chaining 60 to create the foundation. This will be the width of your pillow cover.
- Row 1: In the 4th ch from hook, work 2 dc, then dc in each ch across the row. Turn. (58 dc)
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), in the next stitch, work another dc, then skip 1 stitch and *work 2 dc in the next, skip the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * across the row. Turn. (39 sts)
- Row 3: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the next stitch, *skip the next stitch, work 2 dc in the next*. Repeat from * to * across the row. Turn.
- Continue repeating Rows 2 and 3 until your work measures about 18 inches in height. Change to your next color every 6 rows for added texture and interest.
Border:
- Switch to dark brown yarn for the border.
- Round 1: With right side facing, attach the yarn to any corner. Work 1 sc in same stitch, then 1 sc in each dc across. When you reach a corner, work 3 sc in the corner stitch to create a rounded edge.
- Continue working sc evenly around the pillow cover, placing 3 sc in each corner.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc of the round.
- Round 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st. Finish by weaving in all loose ends with the tapestry needle.
Finishing:
Once the pillow cover is complete, you can insert a pillow form or stuff it with fiberfill. Consider blocking your work for a neater finish. To block, gently wet the cover and lay it flat to dry, shaping it to your desired dimensions.
Optional Variations:
Feel free to experiment with different colors or stitch patterns! You can also make smaller or larger covers by adjusting your initial chain length.
