Instructions:
Body:
1. Cast on 80 stitches using the long-tail cast-on method. This will form the base of the cardigan.
2. Work in rib stitch (k2, p2) for 4 rows to create a nice border. This adds elasticity to the cardigan.
3. On the next row, switch to stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) for 20 rows. Keep the work flat and ensure your tension is consistent. Measure periodically to ensure a smooth finish.
Shaping the Armholes:
4. On the 21st row, start armhole shaping:
- At the beginning of the row: k30, then bind off 20 stitches, k to end.
- Purl the next row.
- Continue shaping: k30, k2tog, k to end (1 stitch decreased). Repeat these shaping rows until you have 60 stitches left on your needle.
Ruffles:
5. For the ruffle, change to a larger size needle (4.0 mm).
6. Knit in stockinette stitch for 10 rows. Then work in (dc, ch1) in each stitch across for the next 5 rows. This creates the lovely ruffle effect.
Finishing the Cardigan:
7. Bind off loosely to prevent the edge from tightening.
8. Weave in any loose ends using a tapestry needle.
9. Sew the buttons onto the right side of the cardigan ensuring they align with the buttonholes made during ruffle stitches.
10. For a polished finish, block the cardigan. Dampen the finished piece and pin it into shape on a flat surface, allowing it to dry completely. This enhances the stitch definition and gives a neat appearance.
Optional Variations: You can add pockets by working two small rectangles and sewing them onto the front of the cardigan. Experiment with different colors of yarn or button sizes for a unique touch!
