Basic Crochet Mesh Bag
Materials:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (approximately 100-150 yards, depending on the desired size)
- G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
To measure gauge, crochet a swatch of 10 rows and 10 stitches in double crochet in your chosen yarn. It should measure about 4 inches square. Gauge is not critical for this project, but it will affect the final size.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
Instructions:
- Start with a foundation chain: Chain 30 (or adjust for desired bag width). This will be the top opening of your bag.
- Row 1: In the 4th chain from your hook, make 1 dc. Continue to dc across the chain. You will have 28 dc at the end of this row. Turn your work.
- Row 2: Chain 3 (this counts as your first dc), then make 1 dc in the same st. *Chain 1, skip the next st, dc in the next st.* Repeat from * to * across the row, finishing with a dc in the last stitch (total: 14 dc and 14 ch-1 spaces). Turn your work.
- Row 3: Chain 3, then make 1 dc in the same st. *Chain 1, in the next ch-1 space make 2 dc.* Repeat from * to * across the row, finishing with a dc in the last stitch. Turn your work. (You will have 28 dc across row 3.)
- Rows 4-10: Repeat Row 2 and Row 3 until your bag reaches approximately 10 inches in height.
- Row 11: When you reach your desired height, make 1 dc in each st across for a solid finish (28 dc). Turn your work.
- Finishing: After the last row, cut the yarn leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last stitch and tighten. Use the tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
- Optional: Handles: To create handles, attach yarn to the top of the bag (about 2 inches in from each side). Chain 50 and attach it back to the top of the bag with a sl st. Repeat on the other side for a second handle.
Blocking:
To give your bag a polished look, lightly steam block it after finishing. Lay the bag flat and use a steam iron (on low) to shape it, being careful not to touch the yarn directly.
This mesh bag is a practical and stylish accessory that you can use daily. Happy crocheting!
