Beginner's Crochet Lace Stitch Sample
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight (4) cotton yarn in bright orange – approximately 50 yards
- Hook: Size H-8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
To ensure your piece matches the intended size, check that you have 10 double crochets (dc) and 4 rows equal approximately 4 inches square. Adjust your hook size if necessary.
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet
- st: stitch
Instructions:
- Make a Slip Knot: Start by making a slip knot on your hook. This is how you will begin your project.
- Foundation Chain: Ch 20. This is your foundation chain. Make sure it’s not too tight so you can work the stitches easily.
- Row 1: In the 4th ch from the hook, work 1 dc. This forms your first lace stitch. In the next ch, work 1 dc. Continue this for a total of 7 dc in the foundation chain. After the 7th dc, ch 1, skip 1 ch, and then work 1 dc into the next ch. Repeat this pattern until the end of the row.
- Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc in this row), turn your work. In the space created by the ch 1 from the previous row, work 1 dc. Repeat across, placing a ch 1 and a dc in each ch 1 space. End with a dc in the top of the last ch 3 from the previous row.
- Row 3: Ch 3, turn your work. This row will be similar to Row 2. Work a dc in the ch 1 spaces again, repeating the same pattern until you reach the end of the row.
- Rows 4-10: Repeat Row 3 until you have reached a total of 10 rows. Your piece will start to develop the lace pattern you see.
- Finishing: Once you’ve completed the last row, fasten off by cutting your yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last loop on your hook and tighten. Use your tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends along the sides to secure them nicely.
Tips:
- For blocking, you can lightly steam your finished piece to shape it. This helps define the lace pattern more accurately.
- Feel free to explore different colors or yarn types to create unique designs!
