Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sp: space
Instructions:
This vest is made up of several Granny Squares joined together. We will create 16 squares total:
- Granny Square (make 16):
- Start with the MC yarn.
- Round 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. In the ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2; repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of ch 3.
- Round 2: Change to Teal. Sl st to the first ch 2 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the same ch 2 sp, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the next ch 2 sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3. Cut yarn.
- Round 3: Change to Burgundy. Repeat the process, joining in the ch 2 spaces, working 3 dc in each. Join and cut yarn.
Once all squares are made, block them to measure 6 inches x 6 inches each for a uniform finish. Arrange the squares in a layout you like for the vest.
Joining the Squares:
Using the MC yarn and a tapestry needle, whip stitch the squares together in rows. Each row will have 4 squares (4 squares wide and 4 squares tall). Work from the top to the bottom and then join the rows together.
Finishing:
To create armholes, decide how much open space you want. The vest can be made to your preferred length. We recommend making it about 25 inches in length from the shoulder down. Once the squares are sewn together, create a final border around the vest using a round of single crochet (sc) in MC, working evenly around all edges and making a few stitches in each corner to keep it flat.
Weaving Ends:
Use scissors to cut the yarn tails, and with the tapestry needle, weave in all loose ends securely inside the vest.
Optional Variations:
You can experiment with different colors or textures of yarn to make your Cozy Granny Square Vest unique. Adding embellishments like buttons or fringes can also personalize your piece.
Blocking:
After completing the vest, wet block it by laying it flat, smoothing out the squares to ensure they are even. This will help with the final shape and appearance.
