Cozy Slippers

Materials:

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (approx. 200 yards) in a soft cream or beige color
  • Needles: US size 8 (5mm) double-pointed needles
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers

Gauge: 16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. To measure, knit a small swatch (4"x4") and check your stitch count against the gauge. Adjust needle size if necessary.

Abbreviations:

  • k: knit
  • p: purl
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • rnd(s): round(s)
  • k2tog: knit two stitches together
  • pm: place marker

Instructions:

  1. Cast On: Using a long tail cast-on method, cast on 40 stitches.
  2. Ribbing (Cuff): Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 10 rows.
  3. Heel Flap: Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every row) and work 20 rows. The heel flap should measure about 2.5 inches.
  4. Turn Heel: Next, work the following rows:
Row 1: (RS) *Slip 1, k1; repeat from * to end.
Row 2: (WS) *Slip 1, p1; repeat from * to end.
    Row 3: (RS) Slip 1, k20, k2tog, k1 (18 stitches on needle).
    Row 4: (WS) Slip 1, p across (18 stitches).
  5. Gusset: Pick up 18 stitches along the side of the heel flap. You’ll have 36 stitches in total. Place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Knit 2 rounds even.
  6. Decrease for Gusset: Next, work the following rounds:
Round 1: k to 3 stitches before the marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker, k1, ssk, k to end.
Repeat this round every 4th round until you have 28 stitches remaining.
  7. Foot: Knit even until the foot measures 4 inches from the back of the heel.
  8. Toe: Begin decreasing for the toe:
Round 1: k to 3 stitches before the marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker, k1, ssk, k to end.
Repeat every other round until you have 12 stitches left.
  9. Finishing the Toe: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.

Finishing Tips:

  • Weaving Ends: Ensure all yarn ends are neatly woven into the project to avoid unraveling.
  • Blocking: Lightly steam block your slippers to shape them nicely.

Optional Variations:

  • Add a decorative edge by crocheting a simple chain around the opening.
  • Use colored yarn for stripes or patterns to personalize your slippers.
