Instructions:
Making the Granny Squares:
- Start with Color A: Make a slip knot and chain 5.
- Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then dc 2 more into the ring. Ch 2, (dc 3, ch 2) three times. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. You now have 4 sets of 3 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces.
- Round 2: Change to Color B. Slip stitch to the first ch-2 space. Ch 3, then (dc 2, ch 2, dc 3) into the same sp. Continue in each ch-2 space around: (dc 3, ch 2, dc 3). Join with sl st to top of ch 3. You should have 4 corners.
- Round 3: Change to Color C. Repeat the previous round. You should now have a total of 4 rounds of granny squares.
Continue to repeat rounds with various colors until your squares measure approximately 6 inches. Finish off by weaving in any loose yarn ends with a tapestry needle.
Assembling the Purse:
- Make a total of 8 granny squares (or more for a larger purse).
- Arrange the squares in a layout that you prefer (like 2 squares wide and 4 squares long).
- Join the squares together using slip stitches along the edges. Make sure to line up the corners for a neat finish.
- Once all squares are joined, fold the purse in half (right sides together) and seam the sides together, leaving the top open.
- Optional: Sew a lining fabric to the inside of the purse for added durability, if desired.
Finishing Tips:
- Weave in any remaining ends using a tapestry needle.
- Block your purse to help reshape and smooth out the squares.
- Add a strap using either a long chain of yarn or a pre-made strap for convenience.
Optional Variations:
- Experiment with different color combinations for a personalized touch.
- Add embellishments such as buttons or beads to enhance the design.
