- Yarn Needle for weaving in ends
- 1 or 2 Buttons (optional for decoration)
Gauge:
16 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches in double crochet. To measure gauge, make a small swatch of 16 stitches in double crochet and count the stitches and rows in a 4-inch square.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- fo = fasten off
- sc = single crochet
- sts = stitches
- rnd = round
Instructions:
Body of the Top:
Start by making a foundation chain of 80 stitches. Ensure that this chain is a multiple of 4 for the pattern.
- Row 1: In the 4th ch from the hook, make 1 dc. Continue 1 dc in each ch across. (You will have 78 dc).
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn. In the next stitch, make 1 dc. *Skip 1 stitch; in the next stitch, make 2 dc.* Repeat from * to * across until the last stitch, where you will make 1 dc. (You will have 52 dc and 26 holes).
- Row 3: Ch 3, turn. *In the space created by the holes, make 2 dc.* Repeat from * to * across and finish with 1 dc in the top of the turning chain. (You will have 78 dc).
- Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the piece measures 12 inches from the foundation chain.
Adding Sleeves:
Once the body is completed, let’s shape the sleeves.
- Ch 1, turn. Sc in each of the first 5 dc, ch 80 for the strap.
- Once achieved the length for the strap, ch 5 and attach to the end of the body (practically forming a sleeve).
- Repeat for the other side.
Finishing:
Weave in all your ends with a yarn needle. If you used buttons, sew them onto the front center for decoration. To enhance the look of your top, block it gently to help even out the stitches and shape it for wear.
Optional Variations:
Try using a different color of cotton yarn or adding a lace trim at the bottom for a more delicate finish. You can also create a tie with the same yarn to cinch the waist as desired.
