Star Stitch Crochet Tutorial (Beginner-Friendly)

What is the Star Stitch? The Star Stitch (also called Marguerite Stitch) is a dense, textured crochet technique that forms rows of star-shaped clusters. It’s perfect for creating eye-catching patterns in scarves, pouches, and blankets.

Materials Needed

  • Worsted weight yarn

  • 4.0mm or 4.5mm crochet hook

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • CH – Chain

  • SC – Single Crochet

  • YO – Yarn Over

  • SL ST – Slip Stitch

Foundation Row

  1. CH a multiple of 2 + 1 (e.g., CH 21)

  2. Row 1: SC across all chains (acts as base row)

Star Stitch Row – Step-by-Step

Row 2 – Forming the Stars

  1. CH 3 (counts as first eye)

  2. Insert hook in 2nd CH from hook, pull up a loop

  3. Insert hook in 3rd CH, pull up loop

  4. Insert into 1st SC, pull up loop

  5. Insert into next SC, pull up loop

  6. Insert into next SC again, pull up loop

You now have 6 loops on hook

  1. YO and pull through all 6 loops

  2. CH 1 (this closes the star and forms the "eye")

👉 Now:

  • Insert hook into that "eye" (the CH 1 you just made)

  • Pull up a loop

  • Then insert into last loop used in the previous star

  • Pull up another loop

  • Then go into next 2 SCs, pull up 2 more loops

  • YO, pull through all 6

  • CH 1
    🔁 Repeat across row

Row 3 – Filling the Stars

  1. CH 1, SC into top of each star + 1 SC into the eye

  2. You’ll end with the same stitch count as the foundation row

Pattern Repeat

  • Repeat Rows 2 & 3 for your desired height

Tips

  • Keep loops even for a symmetrical star shape

  • Blocking enhances the star definition

  • Use solid or gradient yarns — variegated may hide the stars

Best Used For:

  • Wristlets, clutches, scarves, dishcloths, baby blankets
