A classic and elegant accessory, this knitted pocket square adds a handmade touch to any suit. Worked in smooth stockinette stitch, it’s simple, stylish, and beginner-friendly.
Materials
– DK weight yarn, 50g (cotton or cotton blend recommended)
– 4 mm knitting needles
– Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
– Blocking mat and pins (optional but recommended)
Instructions
-
Cast On: 40 stitches using the long-tail cast on method.
-
Knit First Row (RS): Knit all stitches.
-
Second Row (WS): Purl all stitches.
-
Repeat: Continue alternating 1 row knit, 1 row purl (stockinette stitch) until the fabric is a perfect square — approx. 40–42 rows.
-
Bind Off: Loosely bind off in knit on a right side row.
-
Finishing: Weave in yarn tails. Gently block the piece to smooth curling edges and sharpen corners.
How To
-
What is Stockinette? Knit one row, purl the next — this creates the smooth front and bumpy back texture.
-
Why Does It Curl? Stockinette naturally curls at the edges. Blocking helps flatten it.
-
How To Block: Wet the square, lay flat on a towel or mat, and pin edges to desired shape. Let it fully dry.
-
Beginner Tip: Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the right side to keep track.
-
Customization: Adjust size by changing the number of stitches (keep a square ratio: rows ≈ stitches). Use thinner yarn for more delicate squares.
