Lacy Yellow Cardigan
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn, approximately 800 yards of light yellow
- Size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles
- 4 pearl buttons (1 inch in diameter)
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. To measure gauge, knit a swatch of 20 stitches and 28 rows, then measure the swatch to ensure it matches the gauge.
Abbreviations:
- k = knit
- p = purl
- k2tog = knit two together
- yo = yarn over
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Cardigan Body:
Cast on 120 stitches. This will be the back width of your cardigan.
Row 1 (RS): k2, *yo, k2tog, k3; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2 (WS): p all stitches.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 20 inches or until the piece measures your desired length. This creates the lacy pattern.
Once the body is complete, bind off all stitches loosely.
Sleeves:
For each sleeve, cast on 50 stitches.
Work in the same lace pattern as the body for 15 inches. Bind off loosely.
Finishing:
Using a tapestry needle, sew the sleeves to the body of the cardigan. Center the sleeves and align the seam with the underarm area.
Attach 4 pearl buttons along the center front, ensuring there is a buttonhole on the opposite side for each button. You can make buttonholes by casting off 2 stitches then casting back on in the next row.
Weave in all your ends neatly with the tapestry needle.
Blocking:
To block your cardigan, gently wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Lay it flat on a towel to dry, shaping it to measurements and smoothing out the lace pattern.
Optional Variations:
You can add a contrasting color for the button bands or change the yarn to a chunky weight for a cozier cardigan.
