Sunset Stripes Summer Top
Materials:
- Yarn: Medium weight (worsted) yarn in four colors (approx. 100 yards each of pink, orange, yellow, and cream).
- Crochet Hook: Size H (5.0 mm).
- Buttons: 3 small buttons (1/2 inch diameter).
- Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends.
- Scissors.
Gauge:
11 double crochets (dc) and 7 rows = 4 inches in the pattern stitch. To check gauge, crochet a swatch of 20 dc across and 14 rows high, then measure.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
Instructions:
Body of the Top:
1. Start with the pink yarn. Chain 60 (or adjust for desired size).
2. Row 1: In the 4th chain from the hook, make 1 dc. Continue making 1 dc in each chain across. (You should have 58 dc at the end of the row.) Turn your work.
3. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 1 dc in the next dc and in each dc across. (58 dc in total.) Turn your work.
4. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 12 inches in height.
5. Change to orange yarn and repeat Row 2 until piece measures 14 inches in height.
6. Change to yellow yarn and repeat Row 2 until piece measures 16 inches in height.
7. Change to cream yarn and repeat Row 2 until piece measures 18 inches in height. This will give you the body of the top in a beautiful stripe pattern.
Shoulder Straps:
1. For the straps, use the yellow yarn. Chain 30. Turn.
2. Row 1: Make 1 dc in each chain across. Turn.
3. Row 2: Ch 3, then dc in each dc across. Turn.
4. Repeat Row 2 until strap measures 10 inches long. Fasten off.
5. Make a second strap using the same method.
Assembly:
1. Lay the body of the top flat. Mark where you want the straps to attach (about 3 inches from each side). Sew the straps to the body of the top using the tapestry needle.
2. For the button closure, make a buttonhole on the left side by chaining 3 and skipping 3 dc, then continue dc to the end of the row. Sew the buttons on the right side aligned with the holes.
Finishing:
1. Weave in all loose ends with the tapestry needle.
2. To block your top and give it a nice finish, lightly steam the fabric using an iron on low heat, avoiding direct contact.
Optional Variations:
1. You can add additional rows to adjust the length of the top.
2. Consider using different colors for stripes based on seasons or personal preference!
