Simple Ribbed Fingerless Gloves

Simple Ribbed Fingerless Gloves

These stretchy, warm fingerless gloves are perfect for chilly days when you still need to use your phone or keyboard. Made flat in simple ribbing and seamed up the side with a thumbhole gap, they’re an ideal beginner project that looks polished and cozy.

Materials
– Worsted weight yarn (approx. 50g total)
– 4.5 mm straight knitting needles
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stitch markers or safety pins (for marking thumb hole)

Instructions

Glove is worked flat and then seamed:

  1. Cast On:

    • Using long-tail cast-on, cast on 36 stitches. This will fit an average adult hand (adjust in multiples of 4 for larger/smaller hands).

  2. Work Ribbing:

    • Row 1: K2, P2 across the entire row.

    • Row 2: K2, P2 across again.

    • Continue working in K2, P2 ribbing until your piece measures approx. 18 cm from cast-on edge.

  3. Bind Off:

    • Bind off loosely in pattern (knit the knits, purl the purls).

  4. Seaming the Glove:

    • Fold your knitted piece in half vertically (short edges meet).

    • Seam up the side using mattress stitch, leaving a 4 cm opening for the thumb roughly 5 cm up from the bottom edge.

    • You can mark this area with stitch markers before seaming to make it easier.

  5. Repeat for the second glove.

How To

  1. What Is Ribbing?
Ribbing is made by alternating knit and purl stitches, which makes the fabric stretchy and snug.

  2. Sizing Tips:
Try the glove on before binding off — you can add or subtract rows for longer or shorter coverage.

  3. Make It Fit Right:
If the glove feels too loose or too tight, adjust your needle size or cast-on number (keep it a multiple of 4).

  4. No Thumb Shaping Needed:
The thumbhole is created simply by skipping part of the seam — no increasing or extra stitches involved.

  5. Yarn Suggestion:
Use a soft, stretchy yarn like wool blend or acrylic. Avoid stiff yarns for a comfy fit.
