Interlocking Crochet Mug Rug
This stunning little mug rug is a great introduction to interlocking crochet — a colorwork technique that creates intricate, geometric patterns using only basic stitches. The result is a reversible, bold mat that protects surfaces and impresses guests!
Materials
– 2 contrasting colors of cotton DK yarn (approx. 20g each)
– 3.5 mm crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Stitch markers (optional)
Instructions
Notes:
-
Work with 2 colors: Color A (background), Color B (overlay)
-
Each row is worked with only one color at a time
-
Use a simple grid pattern (like vertical bars or checkerboard)
Foundation Mesh (Color A):
-
Ch 26
-
Row 1: Dc in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next repeat across
-
Row 2–12: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next dc, ch 1 — repeat
→ You should now have a mesh of dc columns with ch spaces between
Overlay Mesh (Color B):
-
Join with slip stitch in the 2nd ch space from right
-
Ch 4, dc into skipped space below — weaving in and out of Color A
-
Continue across row: ch 1, dc into ch-space of Color A mesh — alternating between going over and under strands
-
Work 10–12 rows following the interlocking pattern (like a vertical bar repeat or Xs)
Edging (Optional):
-
Work sc around the entire edge using Color A, placing 3 sc in each corner
How To
-
Only One Color Per Row:
Never carry both yarns — always work with just one strand per row -
Weave as You Go:
The overlay stitches are woven through the mesh to form the pattern -
Start Simple:
Use a beginner grid pattern with straight columns for your first project -
Use Cotton:
Holds shape and is heat-safe for mugs or teapots -
Reversible Benefit:
Interlocking technique makes both sides look clean — no messy floats!
