Mosaic Knit Coaster (Geometric Pattern)

Mosaic Knit Coaster (Geometric Pattern)

This stylish knit coaster uses mosaic colorwork — a method of knitting patterns with only one color per row using slip stitches. It’s a perfect small project to explore color contrast and create graphic designs without complex stranding.

Materials
– Worsted weight cotton yarn in two high-contrast colors (approx. 15g each)
– 4 mm knitting needles
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors

Instructions

Pattern Basics:

  • Mosaic patterns alternate 2 rows per color

  • You’ll slip certain stitches with yarn in back (wyib) to create the color pattern

  • Coaster will be approx. 10×10 cm when finished

Set-Up:

  1. CO 23 sts with Color A

  2. Rows 1–2 (Color A): Knit all stitches

  3. Rows 3–4 (Color B): K1, Sl1 wyib repeat to end

  4. Rows 5–6 (Color A): Sl1 wyib, K1 repeat

  5. Rows 7–20: Continue alternating patterns (checkered, waves, or “brick” mosaic repeat)

  6. Bind off in pattern with final color

Finishing:

  • Weave in ends carefully — especially color changes

  • Lightly block if edges curl

How To

  1. One Color at a Time:
No need to juggle yarns — easy colorwork for beginners

  2. Slipping Stitches = Pattern:
Creates the illusion of intricate design with just simple slipped stitches

  3. Use Graphs:
Follow mosaic knitting charts — black = knit/slip, white = background

  4. Great for Leftovers:
You can make a matching set with scrap yarns

  5. Yarn Type:
Cotton yarns make firm, flat coasters. Wool will stretch more.
